Rob

I’m originally from a small city called Portsmouth, Virginia. If you know this place or know anyone from here, then you should know it has never been on a list of best cities! I was raised by a single mother, like many in my community. I have a sister, younger than me, and a brother, younger than her.

We were extremely BROKE. Well I should say my mother was. She did her best to raise 3 kids with only a high school education. She worked full time earning minimum wage.  As part of the working poor, our family was below the poverty line.  Like many born to single mothers in the 70s, we lived in the hood, also known as “The Projects” or low- income government housing. My desire to escape my childhood environment led me to make choices that would become the foundation for the man I am today. Everyone has a story, I know, I know. Take what you can and leave the rest.

Fast-forward to present day (2018)

After graduating high school, I joined the US Marine Corps. The military gave me an opportunity to see the world beyond Portsmouth, VA.  The military also gave me the GI Bill which I used to obtain a B.S. in computer science. My wife was also raised by a single mom. She and I are both first generation college graduates. There has been no inheritance and we don’t anticipate any. Although, it would be a welcome surprise.  I share this with you in case you are wondering what we started with.

We are a blended family and the proud parents of two incredible young men ages 18 & 22! (at the time of this photo) Reshawn had one, I had the other. Yep, we are empty nesters in our 40s! We could not have planned it better if we had planned it. Happily married just over 9 years, together Reshawn and I are in search of a more balanced life! Some refer to it as financial freedom or financial independence. We have learned from others and discovered that there is more than one way to get there.  We are real estate investors who also invest in the stock market. We began our journey with Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. We (finally) have no consumer debt and are on the road to paying off our mortgage. We look forward to sharing our journey with you and hope you will join us as we learn, hustle and grow!
